Kyle Geiger releases another top quality EP on Soma. January sees the American native bring out the Restore EP featuring a collaboration with Bobby Dowell, which makes an explosive start to the New Years releases. Restore is an imposing track with booming bass and an expansive, epic onslaught, which ebbs and flows throughout to create a powerful sound. The dynamic shifts of the tracks and the layered production are all balanced perfectly to hit hard. The sumptuous echoing backdrop and crisp, direct percussion blend with vocal lines and instrumentation, which create a full and bold representation of Geigers style. The drops come in waves and everything pulses with energy and style. The Sundown edit of Restore takes the strong foundations of the track and injects after-dark urgency with whirring electronic pressure and deep momentum. The sounds of sundown are brilliantly projected with a sense of distinctive sonic elements all bustling together to produce a heady track. There is just the right amount of tension in the production, which makes this track another unique release. Close Encounter rounds off the EP with consummate style and extends the musical highs of the release. Geiger collaborates with fellow American Bobby Dowell, who has created some notable releases outside of Soma, to produce a similarly potent sound touched with an element of darkness. The beats and synths build a hard, immaculate output with cycles of big sound and smooth restraint. There is a spacious, ethereal sound subtly enveloping the track which enables this towering EP finale to rise and fall out of its own musical foundations at will. This is an attention-grabbing, infectious release that will provide the soundtrack to many a boisterous night and concentrated mix.

ROD makes a welcome return to Soma Records for his first solo EP since he lent his hand to two powerful new school updates of Slam classic Positive Education. The Buikgrep EP delivers two jacking Techno monsters, delivered in RODs unique style. Think dark warehouses, strobe lights and fist pumps! Buikgrep kicks off the EP as a thunderous kick drum bumps its way over a syncopated hi-hat pattern while slowly mutated stabs work their way in over the track. Slowing in pace to the break where the drums fire back with full force, unrelenting to the end of the track. ROD has definitely designed this one for the dance floors. Second track Mission at first feels more on a house tip with a lighter sounding stab prevalent from the get go. Dont let this fool you however as this track it just as jacking as the previous. The synth opens up into a typical ROD hypnotic loop whilst the drums once again rattle around with total ferocity! ROD is firmly placing himself in the top tier of the new school generation of Techno producers and these two dance floor bomb are testament to someone who has immersed themselves in dance music for well over a decade.

Mark Houle, Joe Starwarz & E.B.E take Vector Lovers track Computrfunk in new and different directions with these remixes. Mark Houle brings a much more immediate and imposing style from the onset of his remix with a dense and full sound thrusting the track forward. The other sonic elements throw more and more onto the recurring rhythms and provide deep drops, which develop new avenues for the pumping track. The layers add to this bombastic output and create a more easily identifiable techno sound, perfect for playing out and keeping rhythm and movement at the forefront. Starwarz brings an intricate approach, winding up through beat changes and gradually circling as he imposes a bass driven organic style. There is a prominent physical element to the reworking with the low-end rumblings carrying the track on a booming foundation. Each drop doesnt wholly redirect but rather adds another layer to the build. The track picks up pace on the waves of these drops with the well positioned beats affording an enticing sound. This is an interesting direction enabling intricacy and a cerebral engagement within the comforting sea of bass. The E.B.E version rounds off this remix EP in a much more progressive yet still hard hitting way. Vocoder vocals ride through the track populated with an almost Balearic synth line that adds to the deeper side of this EP. These unique remixes transport the senses and by different methods provide engrossing and dynamic music that is full of personality.

Mark Reeve follows up his hugely successful debut on Soma with two hard hitting techno tracks Phobia & Fear. Phobia is first off the mark and sets the tone of the EP perfectly. Firing off with its dark, rolling beat and deep bassline it immediately propels itself skywards. Synth stabs creep in while the tracks loops out, ideal for heads down dance floor action. Reeve effortlessly creates a sense of tension going into the break as the tracks punches back in with brute force, never seeming to take its foot off the pedal, continuing to punish till the end. Fear drops next with solid drums and deep heavy sub bass accompanied by eerie samples that seem to force their way from the dark recesses of the track. A resonating lead pushes this track forward, growling as a pitched down vocal tears through. Mark utilises each element of the track to devastating effect creating a deep, evolving techno monster. Mark Reeve continues to excite with his depth of production and shows with this EP that he has an expertly developed and unique sound.

Since the turn of the century, Glasgow duo Silicone Soul have been one of the corner-stones of the mighty Soma Quality Recordings, giving the label its first chart appearance with Right On,’ while relentlessly pushing the boundaries of deep, soul-fuelled house music through their epoch-making albums. As their esteemed Darkroom Dubs imprint approaches its tenth anniversary as one of the UKs leading bastions of forward-thrusting subterranean house music, Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie are releasing their first new music as Silicone Soul on Soma for almost three years. Lead track Smokestak is the pulsating embodiment of the raw house music seam the duo have been mining since the late 90′s: taking on board the essential groove and vital crowd-detonating manoeuvres while injecting flavours of musics past legacy; in the case of the title track a sublimely extended saxophone line which, while evoking the burning soul of John Coltrane, knows how to stretch into the heart of the most delirious dance floor.
